Caring for Moon Pads
Ongoing care of Moon Pads is easy
Simply soak immediately after use in cold water, then rinse before washing in the usual family wash. Always use COLD water to soak and rinse. Hot water will 'set' any blood stains.
Many women find it helpful to keep a small covered bucket (ice cream container? honey bucket? a special 'Moon Time' container?) of water in the bathroom. Pads can then soak until it is time to do the washing. Over 95% of women find that just the cold water soak removes all stains.
But don't panic if soaking in plain cold water is insufficient to remove any stains ... experiment with adding washing soda, lemon juice, milk, salt or a commercial pre-wash product to the soak water... and use what best suits your body chemistry. Do NOT use chlorine bleaches. Do dry your Moon Pads outdoors - sunshine is Nature's 'bleach'.
Tip from Shannon Lush (heard on ABC radio): Here is the way to treat persistent blood stains on cotton fabric - wipe the stain with glycerine and leave for 20 minutes. Then rub the stain with personal soap bar (not laundry soap) and cold (not warm or hot) water. Rub the soap in well with your fingers. Then machine wash in regular wash.
Before using for the first time
When you first get you Moon Pads we recommend washing them to remove any starches used in the fabric manufacture. This improves the absorbency before using your pads for the first time.
Regular and Regular Night Moon Pads are sewn using unbleached, undyed 100% cotton towelling as the core layer. Inserts are often made using the same towelling. If this applies to the Moon Pads you buy you will find a little note enclosed with the pads telling you to wash the pads twice (no need to dry, just two lots of water) using HOT water and DISH detergent before using them. This is important, as the starch-like dressings used in manufacturing the towelling do not come out with clothing detergent. And your pads will not reach maximum absorbency until the starches are gone.
Warning: ironing or tumble drying on high heat may damage nylon layer of water-proof pads.
