Frequently asked questions about The Keeper

Is The Keeper hygienic?

Using basic hygiene rules and clean (drinking-quality) water, The Keeper is as hygienic as other menstrual products. To prolong the useful life of your Keeper, avoid the use of harsh detergents. Do not boil. The use of a weak vinegar rinse may be used when necessary to 'freshen' The Keeper.

Can I get Toxic Shock Syndrome from using The Keeper?

T.S.S. is linked to absorbency and still causes the occasional death. For this reason the use of least-absorbent products (such as The Keeper) is recommended.

Where can I get more information about Toxic Shock Syndrome?

Alice Kilvert Tampon Alert website from Manchester, UK, aims to alert people to the dangers of tampons and in particular to TSS. They have a good 2-page pamphlet which you can download. The pamphlet outlines symptoms and prevention of TSS. ( PS Bookmark this page first so you can come back easily :-)

What do I do in a public washroom?

Just remove The Keeper, empty the contents into the toilet, wipe the rim if necessary and re-insert. Some women find it useful to take a damp tissue or a bottle of drinking water into the cubicle with them.

Can I use The Keeper at night?

The Keeper can be worn up to eight hours before being emptied and is OK to use at night.

It looks like a funnel, how come it doesn't leak?

The tab is hollow, but that is just to make it softer to wear! The hollow tab is not connected to The Keeper's cup. As The Keeper is worn upright in your body, it easily collects and hold your menstrual flow.

Can I use The Keeper if I am allergic to natural rubber?

Unfortunately The Keeper is not suitable for women with an allergy to rubber. Any woman who does develop an irritation when using The Keeper should immediately stop using The Keeper and seek medical advice.

Menstrual cups made of silicon are available from the UK (Mooncup) and USA (Diva cup) - but so far neither of them are registered with the Therapeutic Goods Administration in Australia, so we are not legally able to sell them to you here. However, it is quite legal for women with an allergy to rubber to order a silicon one for themselves from overseas.

Can The Keeper be used by a virgin?

As each woman is different in her personal anatomy, there is no easy answer to this question. Using tampons or The Keeper can not cause you to 'lose your virginity'. A virgin is a woman who has not had sex with a man. As far as being ABLE to use The Keeper, the more important question is that a woman needs to feel comfortable inserting a tampon using her fingers. If so, she can then learn to use The Keeper easily, whether a virgin or not. However, some girls are born with a tiny flap of skin known as the hymen, which may partially cover the entrance to the vagina, and in some cultures loss of this is considered a sign that a woman is no longer a virgin. It is possible The Keeper could tear the hymen, in the same way that a tampon can. The Keeper is a little larger than slimline tampons.

Can I use The Keeper when I have an IUD?

The risks of using a Keeper when you have an Intra-Uterine Device are similar to those of using tampons with an IUD. The Keeper manufacturers suggest it may be "used with caution"... "there should be no problem. This is from our OB/GYN consultant. The I.U.D is at the cervix and The Keeper is below. Normally the Keeper does not slide up thus staying away from the I.U.D. We have not received any complaints. HOWEVER we ALWAYS tell woman to consult with their personal OB/GYN." [ie talk to your own doctor about your use of The Keeper with an IUD.]

How expensive is The Keeper?

Probably the most economical method of menstrual protection available, The Keeper costs only Aust $55 and should last for around10 years! In addition, The Keeper is currently free of GST as both the Australian importer and Moon Pads are small businesses registered for GST exemptions. Buy now before we get bigger!!

Why haven't I seen The Keeper for sale in shops?

Each Keeper can give a woman at least 10 years of menstrual protection. Can you imagine a shop which wants to sell a product which will take away about 130 monthly sales of disposable pads or tampons? Just calculate how much money YOU will save... and shops will miss out on! Click here for a visual idea of the result!
